Jim began working with troubled youth in Southern California in 1978. From 1985 to 1990 he served with New Horizons Youth Ministry in the Dominican Republic and Marion, Indiana. Four of those years he served as Personnel Director responsible for recruiting and training all child care workers for their Dominican Republic boarding school and Canadian Wilderness Stress Camp.
Jim, Elaine and their two daughters moved onto StillWater Retreat in 1991 and formed StillWater Ministries, Inc., a 501-C-3 nonprofit organization. For the last 20 years, StillWater has provided Christ-centered, character building, experiences for approximately 200 urban youth and their families each summer. For ten years StillWater conducted after school outreaches in the inner city of Fort Wayne.
Along with Elaine, his wife, Jim leads frequent mission trips to South Africa and trains and regularly sends teams there to do camps for underprivileged children. In recent years, StillWater also has provided fatherhood workshops and retreats for men of Fort Wayne as well as those in Indiana prisons.
